Adult worker wasps are between 15 and 20 mm long. They have characteristic black and yellow patterning to the abdomen and have a black head and thorax. Wasps are colonial insects living in social groups. Over winter the queen makes her nest so its ready to be established in spring. It continues to grow, the nest along with it throughout the summer period. Wasps can cause harm when presented in large numbers and when they locate near to humans. There are many types of bees that can cause nuisance to humans. The honey bee can build nests in domestic houses which can prove a nuisance as up to 40,000 bees can occupy any one colony. The bees will sting humans, which can prove dangerous to those who are hypersensitive to the venom.

Where possible the honey bee should not be killed as they play a very important role in pollination. They can however be safely removed and relocated.

The bumble bee often use old mouse, squirrel or bird nests as their homes. They are larger than the honey bee and have a more distinctive colour (yellow and black), because of this they tend to cause alarm when encountered, but needn’t as they are quite docile and relatively harmless, only producing a sting when greatly provoked.

The mortar / masonry bee will tend to nest in poorly maintained brickwork on the south facing side of a building. Generally harmless, they can be treated if they begin to pose a big threat and nuisance.

Common black, Pharoahs, Argentine, Ghost and Red ant are the most typical found in the UK. They tend to feed on glucose (sugary foods), so good hygiene is best practice to avoid them. Some are capable of eating meat, and dead and living insects. Cockroaches can transport and transmit disease to humans. They live in warm, humid, temperature controlled conditions such as hospitals and kitchens. There are many types of moth in the UK. The Grain moth is found in whole grain when developing from larval and pupa stages. Dust mites have been implicated in causing dermatitis, rhinitis, respiratory tract irritation and intestinal upsets. They are also implicated in the cause and spread of asthma and other respiratory complaints. The mites tend to be more abundant in beds than anywhere else in the house and easily become airborne, which means they can be inhaled. Control/eradication of the pest includes drying of the environment and vacuum cleaning. Acaricides may be used on the fabric of the building, skirting boards, floor boards etc. Fabrics should be treated with a non-staining formula and bedding should be washed on a hot cycle. The varied carpet beetle and the museum beetle are most commonly found by pest controllers. The adult beetles tend to be about 3mm in length with a speckled appearance. The larvae is dependent on a good food source to survive in humid conditions. They can also be more destructive than the clothes moth to woollen materials, furs, leathers and carpets. Damage can also occur to certain furniture. Occasionally they will attach stored food products. Treatment consists of identifying the extent of the infestation and then treatment of the affected areas with a residual insecticide. Silverfish are primitive looking creatures and are a very ancient insect. Humidity is a key part in their survival especially at the nymphal stages. They are nocturnal in habitat and hide during the day making infestations harder to spot. The signs of a problem include damage to wallpaper, wallpaper paste, textiles and occasionally to books stored in damp areas.
